When we were children, we had to walk to school uphill 10 miles in January with no shoes. And we had to churn our own butter. Also, we had to make our own condoms out of maple leaves and twine. Kate Winslet, too, knows the rough touch of hard times on a young person's life, since her overprotective father installed a pay phone in their house to cut down on talking with boys. According to IMDb:
Winslet recalls, "My father was so worried about our phone he kept cutting it off and installed a payphone in our home. Or he would pick up the extension and sigh and tut down the line when I was talking to boyfriends. The payphone's not there anymore. But I do remember the days of it beeping and me shouting, 'Hang on, hang on, get a coin! Don't hang up, don't break up with me on the phone – I just need a coin!'"
Far be it from us to question anyone's parenting choices, but we have to wonder if all of Mr. Winslet's disciplinary ideas came from episodes of The Brady Bunch.
